$2000 Catalytic converters

 My mechanic told me that my 99 SLK 230 needs 1 of the 2 catalytic converters. He noted that MB asked for more than $2000 for both of the converters. I suggested that aftermarket merely cost 50% of what the MB is asking. My mechanic stated that it may yield a check engine light, possible for installing an aftermarket converter. Any one has this experience? what about if I decided not to spend the money, louder noise?
