Hello all.  My 1982 240D is on the long road to restoration.  One of the annoying hurdles is the climate control system.  I have the 3 large knobs and a sliding lever on the main panel with the rotating temperature dial farther up on the center console panel.  The knobs are all broken and the levers are apparently useless.

So, I have done some researching and it appears that I have the manual system.  Many of the replacement units that I have seen are for the automatic system apparently.  Can I just buy one of these rebuilt auto systems and plug it in?  It looks totally different and has many buttons instead of the three big knobs.  I can't seem to find a rebuilt or remanufactured manual climate control system.  Any insight as to these two different systems would be beneficial as the summer is rapidly approaching.  I'm even willing to get creative here so please hit me with whatever advice that you can.  Thanks!  Here is a photo of the same system that I'm talking about that is one sale on EBay.

Converting from auto to manual is possible and fairly easy but converting from manual to auto is not simple at all. Its not just the head unit but all the vacuum actuators, solenoids, wiring harness, vacuum harness, heater core, monovalve, etc. At that point you might as well just get everything between the firewall and dash cover.

The knobs, cables and everything needed to rebuild the manual control system can be purchased through a dealer or MB's Classic center. http://www.mbusa.com/heritage/classic-center-california.do
