I'm now offering a EGR Valve removal kit for a 5 cylinder Mercedes Diesel Turbo. This will eliminate the EGR valve. "For Testing Purposes" Cost $25 Paypal to Jonthecarguy@comcast.net
Kit Includes the following:
3/16" 304 Stainless EGR Intake Flange
1/16 304 Stainless Exaust cap
700 Degree Intake Flange Gasket
2 Bolts for Intake Flange to remove original
Copper High Temp Sealant to seal exaust cap

I have designed the stainless exaust cap with the pressurized device to ensure proper seal. See picture Below (kit doesn't come with air fitting device)

Its easy to make on your own.

If you need/want it to look stock then just cut a piece of blank aluminum to fit under the EGR face.

Is this to stop the air filter getting fouled? (temporarily of course...)

No, it keeps the intake manifold clean of sludge if you have cleaned it out. If you haven't, it will prevent it from clogging further.

Sludge's existence at all is bad enough. Secondly it blocks airflow through the intake manifold and valves.

The EGR in general is bad for engines. Eating your own feces is a good analogy for what it is to the engine.

Here are the dimensions needed to make your own block off kit and what EGR sludge can make in your engine.

I found an intake to the center of the air cleaner from below to a plastic sort of trap, which then leads off to the intake air by the look of it. Is that part of the EGR system? It also has the blow-off from the valve cover coming in from the top of the air cleaner.

That sounds like the oil catch and crank case ventilation. Different system. Some people still don't like it, but the tube and catch system on the 617 is better than on most cars where it just belches oil striaght into the airfilter and intake track.

I think I'll put some brillo or other material in that little catch box to collect some of the sludge. No idea why theres' also a pipe gong to the exahust pipe. As for the AGR system I'll wait till I've got the air filter assy off, I imagine it goes from exhaust manifold rather than the exhaust pipe.

Is there any kind of performance gain by blocking the EGR?
