Does anyone have any real world data for mpg for a 240d with a turbo? It seems to me that a 300dt often gets better mileage than a 300d NA or a 240D NA so I'm wondering what a 240D turbo might do, since a turbo makes for a more efficient engine, theoretically.

There is no such thing as a 240D with a turbo. Adding one will damage the engine because it can't handle the added stress.

The 300D turbo gets better mileage because it has a higher gear ratio differential than the non-turbo 300D (3.07 instead of 3.46).

My 85 has the 2.88, as well as the SD's. That's why the 85 w123 300DT got better mpg than the 84 and earlier.
