Where does this wire go?

When I went to replace my driving lights, I found this hanging on the drivers side. I was told it is the temperature sensor - I assume for the dash temp display. Does it get mounted anywhere or it just flops around in there? It doesn't seem like a good idea to leave it hanging like it is.

Any clue where it goes? It's an '02 SLK32.

Thanks!

Hey SLiK32! Welcome to the forum. I found mine popped out a couple of times too. It clips into a hole in the lower part of the grill below the bumper on the driver's side, but above the fog light. It's a little bit of a contortionist maneuver, but doable.

Thanks!

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have time to look for that hole.

Hi,

Its not a spare wire. It is the external temperature sensor.
It clips to the lower radiator grille in the space adjacent to your LH fog lamp. Its tip actually pokes through the grille to the front into the air flow.
Too difficult to describe the actual clipping arrangement. WIS doesn't have a picture of the clip which helps.

Presumably the bumper has been off at some time and the mechanic didn't locate the sensor correctly. Unlikely to come off on its own.

Stuart.

Thanks Stuart. I think I can find it now that I know better where it goes.

As for why it's hanging loose....
It isn't the only thing the dealer has screwed up on. I've been extremely unhappy with dealership service. The car has not performed the same since they had it for warranty service.

SLiK32...is your avatar a picture of your car? Post pics...

The avatar is my car. I took that picture in the warehouse at work when the power went out and I was looking for something to do...then lost the fuillsize original when the PC died...

Being new here - what's the SOP on posting pics? I'll try to post some soon.

But here's one for now:

Hi Kevin,
EXACTLY how did you manage to upload your picture.
I believe I have done everything correctly (including resize) but am unable to upload a .jpg.
What is the exact size limit please?
Thanks in anticipation.

For the avatar picture? I tried multiple times without success, from My Profile. Then one time it worked. I don't know what I was doing wrong or what I did right....I'm new to forums, preffering mailing lists instead.
(145 X 145) Max. 20KB according to the upload window.

Thanks to you guys I was able to find the mount for the sensor. It is part of the small grill. I was trying to find it from the wheel well, through the removable cover. It was much easier after popping the driving light grill off. It wouldn't stay in place, likely needs new rubber. So I wired it in. It won't go anywhere until I say so...

Thanks for reply. I intended to refer to a post pic rather than Avtar.
I haven't actually tried to upload an Avtar.
Suspect it must be because I use a Mac in some way. Maybe I have to add .jpg to the file manually (I usually select pics direct from my iphoto files where the suffix is normally suppressed for clarity). Will try this sometime but its hassle that Mac users aren't normally used to!

Thanks. That picture is a combination of several taken at night, 'painting' the car with light and some extra photoshopping...

No problem - Use the 'Embed picture in post', and the upload link next to it. There shouldn't be a problem with the extension - you just don't see that it is there (though I don't see how that makes anything better - I always turn that 'feature' off.)
