I have a 560SL (1987) and I need to know what is the recommended automatic transmission fluid to use. Please be specific. Thank you

I have found Red Line to be one of the best.
I have seen this oil fix a car that was having problems shifting into gears. Once it was in the car I never had a problem again with the gears.

If anyone knows other wise please let me know. I have yet to find better oil for my cars.

I have a 87 560 SL too! What kind of motor oil do you use? They said I need to keep the oil plentiful to protect the chain.

French7,
The motor oil you use will be somewhat dependent on external temperature. For example, in sunny, warm FL, where I am, I use Castrol or Kendall 20W50. If I still lived in NYC in the winter I changed grades to 10W40. Whatever you choose, in my opinion, never use any synthetic oil in your engine. The synthetics high detergent content will act almost like a flush in your engine and get it too clean and your seals will almost assuredly begin leaking. MB recommends synthetics for it's newer engines as they were designed for it. The 117 engine we have was not.

You can use Dextron III or if you want to spend some serious money you can use Amsoil syn., ATF which is what I use in everything. Had really good luck with it. Just remember when U change the fluid you need to drain the Torque Converter too; i let mine drain overnite.

As far as Oil is concerned you can use synthetic and it won't hurt anything. I use Mobil 1 in both my 107 and my wife's Lexus. Had really good results. Occasionally you might run into a situation where the engine leaks a little cause synthetic doesn't have seal swellers in it like conventional oil. but your engine will last a lot longer and the timing chain will benefit too.
