I drive a 2003 BMW 530i and feel the time is right for a new ride. I no longer care to be on the edge of things (BMW), but rather care more for the comfort. I suppose I am getting older. My budget will get me to a 2007 E-class or an older S-class. The reviews I've been reading are essentially saying that Mercedes hasn't been cutting it with their E-class. It spends a lot of time in the garage, which is a serious problem if that's the case.

What I want to know is this: am I better off buying an older S-class or a 2007 E-class? I'm talking fully loaded, navigation, etc. On the E-class side, I'm looking at the E280 and E350. I am used to the BMW, so I like a bit of power under the bonnet.

Any advice would be helpful.

If it were me, I would go with a new E class. I have an 06 E500 4matic, and although it has been back to the dealer a couple of times (replaced the transfer case twice), all work has been covered and they gave me a loaner at no charge. Not sure if that would be the case on a used model, even if purchased from a dealer.

But, if considering the E, i would DEFINATELY go with the bluetec model. It is only slightly more expensive than the gas engine, but MUCH more fuel efficient and just as powerful. And since gas is a bit more expensive than diesel (at least in my area), you will save each time you fill the tank.

The only downside is that it does not meet emmission standards in a few states (Ca, and NY), so it may not be available to you.

Good luck.
