I am lookin for a way to get decent specs on a 560 SEL from the early 90's and late 80's.  I am looking to buy either that or a 2000 GTI  and I just want to make sure that the SEL wont dissapoint me in pick up, I heard somewhere that it has something like 240hp, and I dont know if that makes me happy enough.  Also any info on performance upgrades would be amazing. (how can you only get 240hp out of a massive V8? that makes me sad) anyway any help would be amazing.

the 560SEL has about 230 horses and about 260 - 290 ft/ lbs of torque. But you wont be disappointed on the pickup, you will be disappointed however on the gas mileage!! benz-vettes38064.9412847222

I've got a 1980 500SE, Hong Kong delivered (but now in Australia) its got 177KW\240HP and 405NM(dunno lb\ft) But its got great pickup, it just rockets forwards everytime I put my foot down.

The output of the 560SEL wasnt sad in the 80s it was pretty high, it was the most powerful car on the Australian market apart from a few select sports cars. And remember to compare the torque.

However the Australian delivered 560SELs were downtuned and only had 182KW\245hp and 400NM yet weighed 1855Kgs. So my 500SE which weighs only 1620KGs smokes them hehe. Outputs vary from country to country for some reason. And the American S class' have god-dam awful headlights and bumper bars.

Yeh, the 560SEL's displacement is almost as big as my Corvette's 5.7 and it has excellent power.  The 560 was the most powerful benz yet back in the 80's
