My wife has a latte-a-day habit and I don't trust those flimsy little drink holders in the dash of my 99 SLK. Sooner or later coffee will cascade down onto the environmental and radio controls as well as into my automatic shift lever. Anybody have any ideas of how my wife can safely carry her drinks? Has anybody used a decent after-market holder that works and doesn't look too cheesy? Thanks

I use it every day with my one latte a day too. and mine is a grande and i have no problem, it was put there so you can keep your drink either warm or cold the two vents under it..
i put big water bottles and cool my drink down with the A/C...

If you press down the back of the unit (with it open) and pull it out you can remove the support parts that prevent tall cups sitting correctly.
http://www.slk32.com/pages/cupholder/cupholder.html I use a 20 oz tapered stainless coffee mug that now hangs in the holder without bottom support. I removed the bottom support and the small inner side supports that are spring loaded. Photos show my car as I use it every day. This seem to work fine. You'll see how it works if you remove yours.
You might find a junk yard unit to disassemble and save your original in case you sell your car. Let me know what you think

Notice I left the driver side alone, so any smaller cup will work as well. Both are easy to reach from the driver seat anyway.

just watch out for Fast food drinks. those things tend to go weak and leak out after a period of time. it happens to me in the past, and now my radio is not displaying proper radio screen. luckily i am getting a new deck putting in anyways. so just be careful

Of course, you may try to concentrate on driving instead? NO seriously, I'm jealous as mine doesn't have the drinks holder fitted, just a little cubby shelf instead. First owner didn't tick the box I suspect. 99SLK230K.
I could get one and fit it I suppose, but on OUR roads, you've got to be kidding!
I mean the Isle of Man, roughest roads there is, save for the TT course which is mostly not too bad.

Wife can use hands to hold latte outside of the car

Can't vouch for non-cheesy tho'
