S class battery

I'm about to change the battery in my 2001 S430. What memories will I lose when I disconnect it? A local parts supplier sells a cigarette lighter plug in device that runs on a 9 volt battery and is supposed to save all memories. Will this work or is it even necessary?

u will probably loose seat memory, time/date settings and maybe mieage, maybe u'm frogettin something else, but u can set them up again!

it will work because the control unit needs 8 volts to function properly.

memory that might be lost: power window, radio station, sunroof, steering angle sensor, and clock.

As Sleepwalker but DO NOT apply any load eg Interior lights, ignition, boot light etc otherwide the memory will still be lost since the drain will be greater than the capacity of the dry cell.

The plug into the cigarette lighter wont work on a MB if the ignition is off. If you turn it on the current draw from the stuff will be excessive. A trickle charger clipped on the cables might do the job. Other than that just re-sync the windows and radio, clock, steering angle sensor will reset if you turn the wheels end to end, I dont think the seats will be affected.

You know what else u can do? take that 9volt and attach wire leads to it then attach them to the battery posts and then remove the battery. Problem sloved with no charger, or anything else in the way.

I would disable the trunk light, the older 140s had a switch that would do it. The 9v with clips should do the trick, remove the battery hold down first, and put it back last.

Thanks for the advice on the battery disconnect. Does anyone know of another device that is used in shops when disconnecting? I know of a mechanic who worked in a Sears service cneter for years. Sears must have something that they use on a daily basis. I'll try to contact him for their answer.

I did remove the battery (because it died) without conecting anything
the only thing i had to do was sincronise the sunroof after following the manual.

You must have a non standard radio that doesn't need coding and I'm surprisd that the steering position sensor didn't require "normalising".

Anyway you got the job done.

I have a 95 S and had to give the technician my radio code so the radio would play when my battery was changed.
