I have a 2000 S430 with 101,000 miles the instrument cluster is going dead (fading). Can anyone help me with instruction on how to replace the instrument cluster? Or is there any check I can perform before replacing the unit? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

you mean no backlight?

you simply pull it out to replace.

if the weather is too cold, open the heater full to soften the dash a little.

Thanks sleepwalker. Where can I get one of these instrument cluster beside the dealer ($1500) in California?

that's too much a price for the function of a wire hanger!

i never use the tool anymore for it will break the lens if it slips (it doesn't matter on your case anyway because you will replace it).

i simply remove the left air duct, insert my hand from there and push the instrument cluster from behind. easy does it.
