removing gear knob 1989 300SL

Does anyone know how to remove the gear knob on a 107 1989 300SL please

The knob itself doesn't come off . . . the entire shifter does.  There's a locknut at the bottom of the shaft, after you loosen that the entire shaft spins counterclockwise to loosen.  Of course, you may have to remove some trim pieces in order to get at the locknut.
 
This answer assumes yours is an automatic, not a manual.
