hi tony,

i have been having a lot of different things going wrong with my 1998 clk320 coupe.
1. my radio volume works at its own mind. if i turn it up it goes mute or lowers or goes higer, if i turn it down it either goes mute, lowers the volume or sharply raises the volume.
2. my sunroof/moonroof when i slide it back all the way (inside the car) it will sometimes not close.  leaves about a 4 inch gap. I have zero problems when i just tilt it. ( my crank does not work)
3.My car alarm had been going off at random and they had to program the software to tell the car it did not have an alarm.
4. my trunk release will not open and always has the red light luminated... ( i can jimmy the trunk open at times by pressing down on the trunk and pressing in on the trunk lock and at times i have to have the key inside the lock and turned to the left in order for it to open)
5.when i turn my wheels i hear a squeek (as if something needs to be lubricated)
6.my check engine light just came on and i got the code read and it is the EGR valve
7. .my car is developing rust spots in which i am trying to get the car repainted. ( any recommendations for the ohio area)

Are any of these things simple to fix. I have family members who use to race cars.. and they have actually built cars from scratch  so he has the capability to do these things properly.
Any suggestions?

It should be pretty easy.  Just make sure you pump the brakes after...you don't want to have an accident.  Top off the fluid, and make sure you don't overfill it.  You might need a 5mm allen to remove the rotors...not quite sure on that model year.

1.)  As far as you radio volume problem, you need to replace the radio, which requires version coding.  Try craigslist.com and find some cheap radios on there.
2.)  This is a little weird coz it works when you have at tilt.  hmmmmmm...probably the cable track???
3.)  Sounds like the PSE is defective
4.)  Sounds like the same as #3 coz their tied in with each other
5.)  Maybe Power Steering Rack and Pinion or Steering Column Boot
6.)  EGR Valve Assembly, EGR Pipe Clogged due to excessive carbon build-up
7.)  Sorry...don't know anyone in the Ohio area...just D.C. area...

Majority of these things cannot be fix by just anyone.  Even a Gas Station Tech can't do it coz of lots of version coding and programming via SDS (Star Diagnosis).  I can do it coz I specialize in M-BENZ and I have the same exact diagnostic tool as them.

Hi, Mar,
Being trying to sort out a problem for a while and would appriciate your thoughts on it.
I have a 1996 S500 with 180,000 miles. At idle there is a annoying vibration from the engine which causes everything to shake. This goes out of it at over 1000 rpm.
I left it into my local Mercedes Dealer and they diagnosed a faulty knock sensor and oxygen sensor. I replaced both of each and it is still the same.
Engine mounts are good, new coils, new spark plugs and connectors and a new MAF and sign of a vacumn leak.
Any ideas??  also when you floor the throttle from a standstill there is a "lag" of about a second before she reacts.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Regards Brian.
PS it is an Irish car which may be different to the US spec.

Hi Mar - welcome - you are a brave man. I hope you can answer my question before you are burried in questions from fellow forum members How do you remove the cigar lighter in 04 s class? Thank you.

Thanks Mar, Had it to Dealer, it was control arm links, one broken, one with lots of play. Bad potholes here in Nova Scotia. It was about $700.  completely fixed.  My B200 had a broken coil spring from Potholes as well. That was about $460 Fixed.

Bad winter.

Hope your new shop goes well.

Okay, no vacuum leak, MAF Sensor is new, engine mounts are new, and plugs and wires are new as well.  GOOD JOB first of all!!!  Now what I would do is check fuel pressure, and if that's okay...make sure that the fuel pressure regulator is not defective.  If ALL fuel delivery system is okay then I WOULD SUGGESTION FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE.  This cleans up a lot of your carbon build-up which causes drivability problems such as yours.  A car with 180K, and you've never had fuel induction service...I would strongly recommend it.  I cleans up you throttle body, injectors, piston crown, valves, etc....  Are you sure there's no vacuum leak???  I would visit that...rechecking any work is always a good rule of thumb coz WE'RE NOT PERFECT!!!

Buy the new cigarette assembly, and remove the ashtray assembly (2 torx screws size 20).  FOR ME, the way they designed it...it's almost a one shot deal.  You almost have to mangle the old one, and install the new one.  MOST OF THE TIME, you can bent the tabs inside if the coil is not heating up properly.

I'd appreciate all the help I can get on this. Girlfirend's 2005 C240 4matic lease is ending in May. Service B is needed and I wanted to do everything myself. I changed the oil and filter with no problem, topped off brake fluid which was a bit low, but for the life of me I can't get to the power steering fluid reservoir. I have no idea where it is. My girlfriend has been negligent in dealing specifically with the power steering which has been whining and making noises for some time now. Unfortunately now the car is making terrible loud noises when turning the wheel even a centimeter. Car is starving for some fluid I bet. Even when the car is idle, it makes a nasty noise as I assume the pump is trying to pump something that isn't there. Can someone please direct me to where the reservoir is and how to top it off? I called the local dealer twice to get this info and twice they wouldn't tell me. They did say that I can bring in the car for the Service B which cost almost $600 even though I did all of the service practically.

Appreciate the help.

Thanks.

If you open up the hood...it should be located on the right hand side towards the front of the engine.  If you follow the serpentine belt...one of those pulleys drive your power steering pump, and the reservoir should be next to it.  Hope this help...

Hi Mar,

I started a new thread before I found your offers, re: engine in my 1990 300TE starts then shuts off until I recrank it a few seconds later. It will run for about 1 second after 3 seconds of cranking then stop. When I disconnected the battery for 3 hours it then started and ran for about 4 seconds and stopped. After leaving it overnight it ran for about 7 seconds then stopped (thought it was fixed...). I believe it is fuel related (had a couple of confirmations about that).

I am thinking a sensor that detects if the engine is running (oil, tach, position?) but I haven't been able to find a reference to such a thing in the books I brought on the road with me. I won't be able to get back to it until this weekend.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

I would check Cold Start Valve, Coolant Temperature Sensor, and Fuel Accumulator.  It's one of those three, but the most common is Coolant Temperature Sensor, which control Cold Start Valve via Engine Control Module.  Also, fuel accumulator could be bad as well.

Thank you for starting this thread from a newbie. I purchased a 1986 560SL yesterday ( in cherry condition). Everything was functional when I got it then some wierd things stated happening. Yesterday evening my radio stopped working. Today after a short drive the car would not start. I checked the battery and one of the cables had come loose. I reatached it, tightened it so it would not come loose again, then started the car and the AC stopped working while the car was running. Turned it off then tried the AC on the mid position and the fan worked just fine. Turned it back on then attempted to turn AC on and it would not function. I went to teach a class at 7:30 and at 10:00  when finished I turned the car on and the AC started to function again. What may be causing this  in your opinion? Sure would like to get my radio working as well also.
BTW is there a special way to get this type of car to start in a smoother manner? I have tried no throttle at start up, throttle at start up, and pressing the accelerator one time while the key is in mid position then starting. The third way yielded the best starting response. Your suggestion? I previously owned a 300 SD turbo Diesel that I loved with the exception of the slow low end acceleration but this 560 is a different animal altogether and I love it.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks.

I will check these items this weekend and let you know what I find.

I have to move a couple of Studebakers I sold before I can do anything else so it might not be until next week before I can start pulling parts...

Good day Mar,

I have a 2003 C230 Sport Coupe, the emergency brake does not always release, I pull the release and nudge the pedal with my foot it pops up a half inch or so and often releases. Is there a way to lubricate the cable, or is it typically something else in your opinion and experience. Perhaps it is sticking at the rear wheel?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Hi Mar, I think that this is a great thread!

I have a problem with my UK W203. Its a 2004 (pre facelift) C180k Auto.

Recently in England we have had very strong winds, and my alarm has been going off fairly regularly. Today, my car has displayed an error message ("Display Fault, Visit Workshop"). I have the following symptoms:

The key buttons do not open / lock the car
The indicators (turn signals) do not work
When I press a button on the key, only the left hand side rear number plate light comes on, nothing else happens!
The alarm rocker button has a red flashing light which I haven't noticed before?
The fuel guage is at empty
The "range" option in the menu displays ---
My fuel cap door cannot be opened
The courtesy light does not come on when the door is opened (although it does when the key is pulled out!)
The hazard lights do not work

Despite the above, the car does seem to drive OK (bit not very safely!!).  Radio, air con unit etc still seems to be working ok.

Mar, do you, or anybody else, have an idea?

thanks,
Carl

You said that your radio quit working?? You mean no power or with power, but no volume?  A/C quit as well...hmmmmmmm.  It could be related!!!  First things first, check fuses, as well as the fuse boxes.  Check continuity and wiring resistance.  You're are going to need a wiring schematics.  It's probably your fuse box that controls the A/C and radio...just a hypothesis!!

It's always a good rule of thumb to lubricate, because a lot of those mechanism can stick at times.  Believe it or not, the cold weather does not help.  Try lubricating the parking brake mechanism!!!
