I am looking at buying a 1998 SLK230 - single owner with 30000 miles. I'm really interested in the car because I've always wanted an SLK since they came out with the model, and the mileage is so low on the car. But I was wondering if anyone has heard of problems with the SLK, as far as having to take it into the shop a lot. Someone I know once bought a used S500 and had to take it into the shop 50 times within 3 years. I just want to make sure I'm making a good decision. I love the car, but don't like the idea of paying for it to get fixed every month. Any current owners that have feedback on this would really help. Thanks!

I've owned a '98 230 for about a year. No problems to speak of, had to replace the gas cap. I love the car and contiunually enjoy every aspect of it. I only have 35K on the car.

Good luck

Thanks pj! I found a beautiful 230 and I think I'm gonna go for it since I've gotten the dealer down to $22,900.

Lyntonweb,

Work a better deal. I payed 23K last year!  My car was not "Merc Starmark" & not from an MB dealer.though. I'm in Connecticut which may have influenced the price, as drop tops arn't as popular @ here especially with the oncome of Autumn.

Good Luck

Yeah, the dealer's "sell price" is $23,900 but that's what he has posted on the internet. Surely he anticipated to go down on the price from there. Blue book is $23k so I'm gonna try to bring the price down a little.

Do you have any thoughts on extended warranties? He wants to sell me a GM 48 month/48k mile for $2500. I'm not quite sure if it's worth it, but I never know when that mechanical top stops working, or if something else may go wrong. What do you think?

Check out the forums at MBworld.org and Benzworld. Lot's of helpful people that know the ins and outs of the SLK (170). They an answer just about any question.

I know they had some comments on extended warranties I don't have one. Maybe you can get the dealer to "throw it in to close the deal" as they have some margin on the warranty too.

Let me know how it goes, happy shopping!

NOGO4U,

What's the problem with the radio? I'm not to good at converting km to miles but I figure 18000kn is low.

I've replaced the net windblocker with one I made from plexiglass, much better looking. The custom blockers available online are $200 to @300. I invested a bit of time (a few experimens) and only $30!

Give it a try.

Enjoy the new toy!

Im not quite exactly sure what the problem is but seems like power is being cut cut from the system momentarily and during that cut of power the speakers make a loud thumping sound. Doesn't sound too healthy for the speakers especially since they are BOSE ones.

18,600kms is roughly 11,500 miles...

not bad eh? and I have known the history of the car since new... so no problems there :)

U got any pics of your custom wind blocker I could take a look at?

Sorry no pictures. I copied the style from online products. Attached with stretch velcro, very simple to do. Plexi cuts easily with a jigsaw. I followed the shape @ the rollbar and extended it below the hook loops, I cut out a small section so that it would be flush with the bulkhead. I attached a 2" square of Heavy duty velcro between the clips. One velcro strap is @ the side of the rollbar and the other @ the top. It's about 3' long and 10" high.

Best of all it doesn't block the view to the rear, most important when out in the SLK, ( easy to go a bit too fast) to be sure the police arn't following!

What color? Mine is white with blue/black interior.e sure to use Armourall on the console to prevent peeling a common problem with the SLK. It's too shiney but protects the console effectively.

I just bought a 99 slk with 57,000 miles on it I bought it on the 17th of sept its now the 2nd of oct and they still don't know whats wrong with the car.  The parking lights stay on when the switch is off.  They have replaced everything to do with the parking lights and it still does the same thing. I don't think that i would ever buy a used mercedes again.
