hi, i'm sarah...i drive a ye olde 1984 diesel mercedes with 400,810 miles on it. yes...400,810! This morning my ground cable literally broke off in my hand while i was trying to disconnect the battery (in order to take it to an auto shop to trouble shoot, since "big blue" didn't start this morning) My stepdad has ordered a new cable, but i wanted to do a quick fix and just ground the cable to something but i can't find a good enough place to ground it? Any ideas?!

(oh, and one-up-on-janis, because as you may already know, janis joplin sings "oh lord, won't you buy me a mercedes benz", so i got one up on her!)

Just look for a clear spot on the chassis, possibly near the shock housing where the mounting bolts are. Its only a temporary fix but it should do the trick.
