I was reading a lot of posts on edmunds and they are overwhelmingly negative for the 02 C240as far a reliability. One person stated that it depends on if the car was manufactured in Germany or Brazil. Has this been confirmed, I guess you could look on the VIN to see where it was built, but I wanted to know if there was any validity to this?

you can look at the 11th digit of the VIN and tell which plant the car is manufactured in but C-Class is manufactured only in Germany as far as I know. I guess A-Class is manufactured in Brazil.

Thanks Kaan, I ran the vin and it was manufactured in Germany. I guess my concern is that I just picked one up for someone who will buy it from me and I came across a lot of negative feedback as far as reliability when looking at msn autos, a lot of people complain about having to bring them in for repair quite often, electrical and other mechanical problems. have you seen or heard of this. I am just trying to determine how reliable the C240 model is. Thanks

The C Class saloon (sedan) and I believe the estate are manufactured in East London, South Africa. My dealer informed me when I ordered my 230 Sport saloon in September with a 4-5 month wait. They are then shipped to Bremen, Germany for either customer collection or delivery in Europe.

I didn't think it was a secret that MB hit a nadir in quality from 2001-2004. Yes, I'd be cautious about purchasing a 2002 C-Class. I'd certainly want an extended warranty from MB. By 2003, MB was the 14th most reliable luxuary car on the JD Power report. That is the automakers lowest point ever. With a new focus on quality, MB hit 5th place in 2005 and continues to improve or perhaps, continues to recapture its reputation.

from 2001-2003 there was a quality downturn but you are lucky that it is not a 2001, I heard that they have the most problems. By the way, there is response to someone else's post C-Class is only manufactured in Germany, dont mix it with BMW. Some of the 3-series are built in South Africa.
