I just purchased a 1981 300D with a non-functional odometer (the speedometer works fine). Does anyone have thoughts re: how difficult it is going to be to repair/replace the failed unit? Is the odometer part of the speedometer or a separate instrument; are there replacements available outside of junk yards; etc.? Thanks!

The speedo head can be removed from the cluster & sent out for repairs. Check w/ local repair shops to locate repair facility.

If you take out the speedometer from the instrument cluster and remove the back cover, you will see a gear running from the speedo to the odometer.
At the odometer gear cluster, this gear extension turns an unmarked gear (all the other gears carry numbers to record the distance travelled).
This unmarked gear should not rotate freely on the common spindle(metal rod) for the gears for the odometer to function properly. But due to wear, it gets loose.
Just use a drop of locktight to secure this gear to the spindle so that it does not turn freely.
I used epoxy glue in my W123 and it has been working fine for the last 5 years or so.
