Just bought 1995 500sl...cheap husband put 82 octane in first tank of gas. Today engine light came on is there any relationship to cheap gas and service engine light?

Thanks so much,

worried preowned car buyer.

I did the same thing once, check engine light came on within the first 20 miles. Code read out as knock/ping detected by sensor (aka cheap gas). Had the code read and reset at advance auto and put in a bottle of Lucas octane booster for that tank right there in their parking lot and never used anything but premium since then and all has been well. If you are in the U.S., autozone, advance auto parts, etc can reset the light and read the code for you to be certain.

More than likely the knock sensor picked up on the cheap gas.

I'd do what rcltrh says, clear the code, chuck in some Octane booster , then only run premium.

82 octane? What's the altitude where you buy gas?
