C280 ENGINE FAULT???
I have a 1997 C280 SPORT V6 AUTO. 75k miles. It is a beautiful car but has it developed a fault which is driving me mad. When the engine is cold the car can be unresponsive as if there is a fuel blockage. Sometimes it clears itself. However when this problem is really bad the engine misfires when idling. Usually switching the engine off and then back on can clear the problem. In general the car can run rough and it definitely is'nt performing to it's potential. The car has recently had a full service including plugs etc and I have tried fuel additives to clean fuel injectors etc. Also diagnostic readings carried out on the car are misleading. One reading indicated an electrical fault possibly a coil? another reading indicated a fuel air intake problem? Free beer in Edinburgh Scotland to anyone with the right answer!!!
Hi Doogster,
beer sounds good if the weather remains OK!
Firstly. What did the dealer say about the problem? If they have done a full service they should also have advised what is wrong with the car. Not just done the easy stuff. Maybe the service was done by a non Mercedes garage in which case they might not have the appropriate equipment to do a proper diagnostics check.
You say the diagnostic readings are misleading. Why do you say this? More importantly what were the readings e.g. P0170 or whatever. As part of the service the dealer should have done a quick diagnostic test (all systems) and this should be available as a print out, system by system. Proof the job was done.
The P codes do not say what the CAUSE of a fault is, just what the fault is. i.e. Misfire. Not No. 2 injector or whatever.
Anything else you would like to add to the symptoms? Check engine light on?
Date / Mileage / conditions when problem started might add something.
Does the car perform correctly (acceleration/fuel consumption) when warm?
Any other faults ongoing?
Since the problem sometimes clears itself, and on other occasions a restart clears the problem, I would favour an electrical/electronic based problem, but at present it could be either electrics or fuel. Need a bit of additional info before suggesting cause with any degree of credibility.
