Check engine light - running rough

I was driving today and my ML430 was running great.  All of a sudden my check engine light comes on.  Within a few minutes, the car starts running rough.  It was running perfectly smooth just before the check engine light went on.  I've had to clean out my MAF a few months ago...could this suddenly cause it to come back on and run rough?
