Check engine

I have a 1997 SL 500.. recently the "check engine" light came on and the codes indicate a bad gas cap.  So far two new caps with the same results after about  50-100 miles.  Part cap connects to looks fine and no known damage.  Any suggestions?

Usually when that light comes on it is the oxygen senser on the older ones.
