I also have a c230 same year. As far as I know this is the phone activating itself. The trick is getting a phone line installed. I have heard that you gotta go to the dealer purchase a phone from them blah blah blah... set you back at least a grand.
Any one know how to get a phone and the integrated phone to work?
Can cingular wireless do it?
Any suggestions from you veterans out there?

your car chassis number.... something like:

WDB 202023 1A 123456

you can find a plate on the b-pillar when you open the driver's or passenger's door.

on US version, you can also find it on the windshield on driver's side near the wiper blade (park position). it starts with WBA

I found the chassis # isnt that the same as the vin #?
Anyway, it is wdbha 24g5ya831712.
How can that help to resolve the phone hookup dilemma?

yes, it's the VIN number too.

i will know exactly what brand of telephone you got, and all the accessories installed in the car and system like D2B (digital data bus), CAN (controller area network), control units, interface, etc.

i will look into it.

one reason i like this forum is that i can learn new problems from you nice guys, and even if i don't know the answer now, i can always find some answer.

your car is C230 Kompressor
202024 1A 831712
engine number is 111975 12 068251
delivery date was 10.11.99
lights is bosch
5 speed transmission
sunroof is glass version
seat heating on front
sport equipment package
no parktronic system (PTS), first aid kit, or warning triangle.
etc.. etc...
those are just some few information i need to know that might help.

okay, here we go:

*your car was originally produced without a telephone. the telephone must have been installed by the dealer or by yourself using the brand of your / their choice.

having a dial tone on ignition is a problem. some wiring installation must have cause the problem. have it checked.

** your original radio is: MB Audio 30 - USA
you got no CD Changer.
if you want to install a Compact Disc Changer, you must buy the part number "B6 7 82 2771"

it is using a D2B (Fiber Optic Cable). you need to install a D2B cable from CD Changer to the radio. part number is "202 540 38 07".

other parts may be needed and this can only be checked by the person who will install it.

Yes you can install a CD Changer.

Hey Sleeepwalker,
Wow! you know your stuff!
Now you left me with new questions . you must forgive me for I am curious to a fault.

Why is there a problem if the dial tone appears upon ignition?

Can a phone line be installed to work on the car & handset? (I use Cingular as my carrier) without using MB dealership help?

I have seen posted that others have used aftermarket disk changers (Pioneer, I believe) rather than oem parts. possible?

to give the engine a little more power what can be done? Pulley kits? chip tuning? (I've heard not too effective), Headers, exahust?

Thanks for you input, I know that You have a lot to chew on here so I wont place any more questions for know.
By the way you forgot to tell me what color my interior was!
Thanks for all the help,
Alex.

of course i know the interior alex and about 20 other things i didn't mentioned because it's too long. am a lazy typist you know. unlike lugnut and germanstar who seems to an editor in chief on new york post.

i don't know cingular. was it wireless?

of course. you can use motorola brand. it's not bad. handsfree and the radio will mute if a call is recieved. just make sure to connect that blue wire to the blue wire also provided at the back of the radio.

you can use pioneer too if you have interface. (it's like a language translator so they can understand each other's signal).

your car got kompressor already. you got all the power you need. i prefer you just keep it as it is.

Mercedes vehicles shouldn't have VIN # that start with WBA, because that define it as BMW, not a Mercedes.
Hmm..sleepwalker might be a spy from BMW....

Hey Sleepwalker,
Cingular is a wireless carrier here in the states. I currently have a Nokia brand phone and would hate to change it. I presume I would need to speak to a person in the wireless industry (Cingular) to see if a crossover is possible or is motorola have a deal going on with Mercedes?
any ideas Sleepwalker?

You know this is a "want" not really a "need" type of deal here.
These cars have a lot of technology (though mine is a 2000)and would like to explore all of their possibilities.

Thanks again,
Alex.

it was my mistake MioCLK

i was used to chassis number on day to day basis and almost forgot that USA version starts with WBA and recognised as VIN

yes, rest of the world version for mb starts with WDB too.

i admit that i have been working with BMW dealership for 5 years as senior technicians, but that was 10 years ago when E39 was just starting to get famous.
not much challenge in bmw because the car was too easy to repair and even the roadside shop can do it. you got at least 60 control units inside a mercedes-benz while only 20 in bmw (more or less depending on model).

i still repair bmw now once in a while. i got everything by my own (GT1, TIS, ETK, etc.)

they have a contract with nokia now and have discontinued the motorolla as standard options.

anyway, aftermarket installation is always a customer's choice. but you can get a package equipment from mb if you want.

Jebuz christ, sleepwalker how do u know so much just by the vin #, you searched it up cuz u work for MB or something?

I'm new here too and you've motivated me to go do something drastic like study this stuff day and night or go work for Mercedes.

Yeah i know this has nothing to do with anything, but what's up guys...i'm going back to reading threads...pretty interesting...you learn somethin' new everyday.

-Kelvin

I got 2002 C230K...suggestions on small mods to boost power? Nothing too expensive...yet...

Btw, any you guys know why MB decided to drop in the 1.8L instead of keepin the 2.3L? Costs or what?

You can do so much more with the 2.3 can't you?

(Again...bear with me if i sound like a newb...still tryin' to learn)
