I bought a 1999 SLK230 abouth a year ago. It is a fantastic car. During the last few months the center console has started peeling up. Any thoughts on how to prevent this and what the cost would be to have it repaired?
thanks...perry

Hey, I got about 3 months ago a 2001 SLK320 with 12k miles that used to belong to my dad. The car is beutifull, and in mint condition..it was is weekend roadster. Of all the mercedes We have owned, this car seems to be the only one that I haver found a defect, and it is that the beige center console peels. After examing it I camr toa conclusion why, if you can notice..when it peels, what your are left with is black spots, this is because basically this parts is not leather as the rest of the interior but Black plastic painted to mathc the leather. Really i think the only way of fixing it is having it all peeled and repainting it ata mercedes experienced shop. What i plann to do is transform all my interior from Beige/Black to Red/Black so I am just going to peel all the beige of and replace all beige lether with the black one.

I have the same problem with my console peeling.
Does anyone have an aftermarket contact to purchase new console instead of having the peeling repaired? My local MB dealer wants to charge me $500+ to replace 2 sections of my console...seems high to me...

I am actually getting my center console replaced by my dealer using my Warranty. I am going in 03-24-04 to get it replaced. They say these new consoles will not peel as easily as the ones our cars came with. I thing that 500 $ for 2 new parts installed for a "Dealer" is not that bad-considering how damaged are yours.

Use a local interior vinyl refinishing expert... might cost less that $200 and will be a huge improvement in looks without the large cost of replacement panels... that will *still* peel.

Does anyone know a website that sells interior door handles. My beige door handles are peeling revealing the black underneth them. I've tried formymercedes.com and globalautoshop.com, but they stopped listing them.
Any suggestions??? Thanks!

Same problem with my 1999 SLK230 here. In my opinion, Mercedes designers really dropped the ball with this "great" idea.... This is the 6th MB i have owned since 1989 and have never experienced a problem like this. My door panels also peeled. That happened while it was still under warranty and they were replaced by the dealer. I have never had another problem with them. Maybe they figured out what they did wrong and fixed it. Hope so. Meanwhile, I have yet to find anyone in Orange County, CA that will strip and repaint these parts. Anyone have suggestions? I would be willing to pull the parts and send them away for repair if anyone can suggest someone reliable. I guess these are dealer only parts since I have not been able to find OEM replacements or "after market" replacements for them. I am also open to suggestions on replacements too.

My '01 SLK 320 has the same problem on the console and the grab handles on the doors. The latex paint just seems to wear off do to friction.
I am going the visit my local PPG auto paint center and ask them to mix me up something to spray them with. If it works out, I will offer repaint services to any forum member for time and material costs.
I will let you all know.

I removed my handles and sprayed them with interior dashboard paint, Mid grey. Were oyster. VHT brand.
Looks good to me.

my god, is there anyone out there that does not have this problem. you would think that for an almost $40,000 car, they could just have the console plastic dyed the specific color, not just cheap out and paint it. our 2000 SLK did the same thing. if the warranty is up, it's your dime from what everyone else seems to say.

Your replacement parts look GREAT!!!
Where did you get them?
Appx how much did the parts cost?
Were the items difficult to replace?
Thanks

Mine was peeling when I bought it. I ended up pulling the entire interior from the car. I rubbed it down with denatured alchohol, sanded the peeled areas and then painted the whole thing. I used flat black for the colored areas and semi-gloss for the areas normally black. I think it turned out allright, but I'm on the lookout for a wrecked Crossfire. I'd like to replace the whole thing.

Just posted my solution to this problem to "Enricoroberto" from 8/19/06.
Check out my solution.
Incidentally investigated everything including upholstery to the console. Found just repairing it like I did in this post works well and the fixes take me just a few minutes now. I have a hard time telling where I have fixed the scratches prior.
