It would appear I have the same problem as Mark North Calif posted 5/1/2005 which sleepwalker identified. I put the bonnet down while the battery was on trickle charge. The next morning the alarm was going off and smoke being emitted. The car would start (with a new batter) but no accelerator at all.
It would seem the terminals of the charger had been touching the underside of the bonnet and the plastic on the terminal had melted!
Ringing round at the moment to see if it can be sorted without it going into a dealership. Will keep you posted.

Just read further about 're-setting' - how do I do that?
