i have the same problem. asr light on- it seems like a 6000 expense, i dont know if there is any way around it.  both actuators are out and a new harness is needed too.

Can't the ASR just be disabled? It's a worthless crappy outdated idea that should be removed from every car, not just MBs. People should ride in a city bus if they don't want to drive. Slipping around a little when the road is wet and knowing how to handle it are parts of driving.

Americans become less and less adventurous every year. And don't mention the safety factor or other liberal rallying screeches. Just as many people die today as 20 years ago from spinning a tire at a stop light. Pretty much zero. Have you seen that person trying to get up that snow-covered hilly road but can't? It's because they have the ASR turned on.

Pull the plug.

I've had a 500SL (1991 model) since 1995. It's a great car, but the problem you describe does occur occasionally.
I take it to my friendly Mercedes dealer, who do the same trick every time to resolve it. All they do is adjust the throttle cable; tighten one notch I think.

I think this only affects the pre '95 cars, as at some stage in '95 the SL became a "fly by wire" vehicle.

Good luck.

Graham.

how about the cheap way is to clean the abs speed sensor then change the brake light switch.

I think I have the solution for you...
Please tel me if the light comes 'on' if you start the car keeping your foot on the brake?
If 'NO' i'll tell you the secret!!!
I had the same problem and it's very simple...works like a charm...
let me know

You may want to look at this info. http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_asr.html
I am dealing with the same issues. But the ASR seems to shut off when the car is warmed up after about 15 miles of driving. It sounds like he figured it out. Not cheap though.

I had a problem with a 1993 300e 3.2. The ASR light comes on when cold and I had to press accelerator 3/4 down until I got a response from the throttle. I happened to turn on all the lights the rear defroster the heater fan and all of a sudden the throttle response was normal. I turned off all the electrical stuff and the problem came back. I measured the voltage at the battery and it was 18.8 volts. I turned everything back on and it fropped to 13.5 volts. Replaced the OVP and that cured the problem.

Sorry the high voltage was 16.8 not 18.8 volts in my previous message

the voltage regulator inside the alternator already controls the voltage.

the OVP relay only cuts off the excess surge or high current load.

Sorry, it was the regulator that I replaced that fixed the problem. I had over voltage on my mind when I first posted, that is why I called the regulaor an OVP.

Have you been successful in finding a way to disable thr ASR ?? We own two 1992 600 SEL's and would love to shut them off.

No. I'm sorry to say that I haven't.

I had my tires rotated recently. Whenever I turned the ASR off, the car would go into limp mode after about five miles or so. I had to keep it turned on. After a while (I don't know how long) it started working normal again. I don't know what the tire guys did to cause that.

I had new brake pads installed and the ASR always goes into limp mode when the car(600SEL) is first started. Restart thr car and the ASR remains off for the rest of the day. I agree with Lugnut that the ASR is an outmoded contraption and REAL DRIVERS DONT NEED the ASR.

Please read carefully!!!
There is a micro switch under the gas/aceleration pedal.
Activate the switch! Keep it 'on' 'pushed' and you will never see the ASR light 'on'again. The traction control will still work though.
For those who will not find the switch will post photo tomorrow
Glad I could help!!

Sorry, but that's absolutely no help at all. The ASR light isn't the concern. You need to read more carefully.

Is this micro switch defeat the "secret" you were claiming to have earlier? Criminny.

Staying out of limp mode. That's the point in case you can't pick it out. No one cares about the ASR light being on or whether ASR works. Being able to disable it would be nice, but just turning the light off doesn't do anything but turn the light off.

if you think the problem is the throttle actuator, i fixed mine today with just 10 dolars. Inside they have a little electric motor which is what makes it open, try taking it to an electrician.

I have a 1995 SL600 and am having the ASR fault problem too.  Mine works fine when cold no matter now long I drive.  When I shut it off while hot and let it set a few minutes it goes into limp mode.  It needs about an hour or two to cool down before it will run properly again.  I have not figured out a way to get it out of the limp mode without letting it cool down for a couple of hours.  Also the ingine does not seem to be limited by RPM.  It seems to rev as high as I want while in limp mode but it just has no torque at all and will barely get out of its own way.  I've been told not to change the actuators until I change the wiring harness.  My question is how hard is it to change the harness and who makes them.  Is there more than one manufacturer?  If yes, who should I buy one from?
